Erasmus Exhibition
re-village ~ MESEN
Annotation
Mesen, the smallest city in Belgium, has a decayed urban structure. The main square does not fulfil its function, people have nowhere to meet and spend time. The church is the town boundary, beyond which there is only an empty meadow and two ponds.
I'm taking up a plot, analyzing the pleasant parts. I find that I feel most comfortable in the semi-public areas. I try to apply the concept to the whole design. I'm creating a kind of garden city, the whole design is in the spirit of semi-public and semi-private spaces. Cars are not allowed. We're in Belgium, the bikes are more important!
I'll add a square to the church. A place for people to meet or to rest for a while. I'm closing it with a community space for the elderly with a café and housing adapted to them.
my key experience from erasmus
The city itself gave me the most out of my stay, Antwerp is a wonderful city to live in. If you forget about the daily rains, which you quickly get used to, you get excited about the lifestyle, the bike rides, the people, the architecture,...
in the school one chooses from three studios - the re-village studio emphasizes practicality, beauty in simplicity, sustainability, ecology, you need to analyze a lot and understand the context:)
