This project deals with the city centre of Strakonice. Strakonice is a rather small city in the south-west of Bohemia. Although we speak about a historical town with a long history, nowadays, the city centre from an urban planning point of view does not seem to be overly complex, and in other ways somehow not finished. There is a magnificent castle, a river running right through the very centre and very nearby there is a main square. Individually, these parts work very well. But together they do not function as a true city centre. For a pedestrian the overall impact is mostly influenced by a busy wide road going through the centre dividing the square from the castle. There are also parts of residential blocks that are not finished. So there is always that feeling of looking at someone’s backyard. The traffic and the unfinished urban structure is an important point for the city to deal with.
Student Tereza Říhová dealt with this actual situation precisely. She took the original urban scheme and added just what was necessary. Her approach was very decent and found the right way to renew the feeling of a compact city centre. She worked well with the scale and height of the proposed structure. With the help of well chosen new regulations she created new little piazzas as well as a new riverbank elevation, coupled with a new urban look for the streets, and new block structures. The presentation is rather minimalistic. A more specific way of visualisation would have helped to better understand even a little more of the student’s approach. Nevertheless, the presented proposal showed a very high quality of work on a perfectly chosen task.
