NECROPOLIS BEHIND THE WALL
Annotation
The Prague Marian bastions, although currently desolate, have the quality of a dignified place in the historic city center. It is therefore remarkable that they maintained an unexpectedly calm character. This quality is what I try to preserve in my design of the necropolis, which I propose at the bastion XII.
I base my concept upon the cemetery wall as an element controlling the moment of entry to the 'other side. The element that most often defines the cemetery as such.
I design the cemetery as a linear structure, a wall that completes the original fortification line, which has now disappeared. Part of the wall in the area of the bastion of the Virgin Mary is dedicated to the space of a two-story columbarium and a small funeral home, which is situated at its northernmost tip.
