Underground Chapel

Matyas Haranta

Annotation

There is a pilgrimage site in the middle of the inhospitable Icelandic tundra. It's an underground chapel. Thanks to its location below the surface, it avoids strong winds and thus provides shelter not only for nearby pilgrims, but also for ordinary tourists. We can conceptually divide it into two parts connected by a bridge leading over the chapel and a tunnel. The first organic part with rounded shapes, in which we find the chapel itself with an altar and a hot spring that heats the interior of the building. The second part consists of two rectangular rooms. In the first one is a common room with sitting by the fire, and in the second there are rooms for sleeping and a bathroom.
