Santini, Kinsky, and Montesquieu: Architect and Patron between Palladianism and Romanism in the Early 18th Century

prof. PhDr. Pavel Kalina, Ph.D.

The three-wing chateau in Chlumec on Cidlina by J. B. Santini is usually interpreted as an extravagant result of the architect´s fantasy. The chateau, however, represents a specific version of Palladian villa on the hill. Its plan was, in fact, given by a combination of older plans by two different architects - Carlo Fontana and Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach. This combination was, in all likelihood, inspired by count Kinsky who commissioned the structure, not by the architect.
