Sustainable, bold, innovative. Urban Design Award honoured the best urban design projects

The competition compares urban planning projects from universities in Central Europe. 57 projects from V4 universities participated in the 29th edition. The jury recognised the winning team from Budapest as an inspiring example of how to address the problems of large metropolises regarding the future sustainability of the area. Four prizes were awarded to projects by students of the Faculty of Architecture of the CTU.

The award ceremony took place on 17 March in the presence of Dalibor Hlaváček, dean of the CTU Faculty of Arts, Jakub Vorl, head of the Institute of Spatial Planning, and Regina Loukotová, chair of the jury from ARCHIP Prague. The award-winning works were selected by an international jury consisting of Eva Jeníková, Maciej Pilny, Dorota Kamrowska-Załuska, Zoltán Dorogi, Martin Jerguš, Martina Tunková and Regina Loukotová.

Laura Brskejska and Lotti Hagauf's proposal for the revitalisation of the now-neglected Danube riverfront in the Hungarian capital was praised by the jury for its artistic depiction of the relationship between the river and the city, its emphasis on sustainability and the preservation of the natural character of the site, which offers active leisure and recreational space. “By changing the function of the old houses, it creates a diverse community space where generations can meet and engage in various daily activities, emphasising the interrelationships between local communities,” the jury added in its evaluation.

Tereza Machačová and Roman Totušek from the Cikán studio took second place with their project Na lajně. The design restores the lost waterfront to the city of Kolín. At the same time, the railway corridor's roofing gives rise to a new urban promenade. It includes adding new buildings to the current urban structure. The jury was impressed by the project's innovative and bold approach and comprehensive design.

The central theme of the project Touch with Landscape by Michaela Tolopčenková from the Salzmann studio is the restoration of historical road networks in Černá v Pošumaví. New nature trails are being created to guide visitors through the area. The design is also related to the treatment of water in the landscape, natural conditions and the regulation of buildings. The jury appreciated the work on large-scale complex landscape design. The thorough analytical part is reflected in the landscape architectural design. The concept of landscape permeability is sensitively linked to the restoration of the water regime.

Štěpán Macek from the Šindlerová studio won a special jury prize for his work Rakovník: Castle Circle; Samuel Maga and Daniel Marek were awarded for their project Another Chapter, which they worked on in the Vojtík studio.

The winning projects will be exhibited on the ground floor of the CTU FA until 4 April 2025, after which they will be displayed at other partner universities. All the awarded works can also be found on the competition website.
