AMBI[T]VALENCE
Annotation
Through the cloister of the Zákupy Monastery, the first Capuchins flow in 1681, ushering in years of vibrant development. In 1950, the subdued steps of monks in the cloister are replaced by the steady rhythm of military marches as the monastery is used by the Czechoslovak army, and later by the Soviet army. In 1990, the last steps fade away. In 2005, the roof collapses. In 2025, it is you who walks through the cloister.
The cloister (in czech "ambit") bears witness to development, use, and decay. The ruins take on a new purpose – they serve as evidence of the transformation of the place. The monastery carries both the negative and the positive, contradiction, duality – ambi[t]valence.
