PLZEŇ/PILSEN OF THE FUTURE: THE OUTSKIRTS OF PRAGUE?

SS 2025

URBAN DEVELOPMENT AROUND THE RAILWAY FROM PILSEN TO PRAGUE.

The realization of a railway tunnel between Prague and Beroun will cut the journey by train from Pilsen to Prague in half. Pilsen will thus become practically a "suburb" of Prague, with a high potential for the development of new quality housing, modern workplaces and services. For Pilsen, this is a great chance to transform from a traditional industrial and working-class city into a truly modern, vibrant metropolis.

The task for students of Ateliér Šindlerová / Urban Planning Studio in the winter semester 2024/25 will be:

Searching for the development potential of neglected and extensive used industrial areas (not only) around the railway and around railway stations and stops in the wider center of the city of Pilsen.

A vision of the urban development of the inner periphery and the scars on the face of the city, where traditional booming industry, traffic arteries and railway tracks intertwine with housing, an impressive history and the landscape around the rivers.

All this in the context of the unstoppable approach of Pilsen to Prague, thanks to the gradual modernization of the railway connection and the planned construction of a high-speed train from Prague to Germany via Pilsen.

------------------------------------------------

The studio assignment will be processed in collaboration with the Urban Planning and Development Institute Pilsen.

------------------------------------------------

On the basis of a joint trip to the territory being addressed, the students will choose a preferred part of the territory around the railway and in pairs or threes they will gradually process the mapping and analysis of the current state of the territory and formulate a vision and overall concept of the structuring and arrangement of their part of the territory, all this in cooperation with classmates solving surrounding area. Then, each one alone or in pairs will prepare a detailed urban planning proposal for the selected part.

At the end, the individual partial urban planning proposals will be combined into a single whole, and the result will be an overall urban development plan for the entire area along the railway in Pilsen.

The following sub-locations with completely different characters and a specific atmosphere, are identified as a framework for the solution:

1. Around the Doubravka train station - a railway stop right in the middle of the housing estate and the original development of family houses.
2. Rokycanská boulevard - one of the main entrance gates to the city, which today is more of a highway in the middle of the city than an attractive street or city boulevard.
3. Railway node in the city centre - a railway junction not far from the historic core of the city, filled with shopping centers and parking lots.
4. Around the main station - the gateway to the city from the train, which is a disgrace to the city and a bad advertisement for all visitors who arrive by train.
5. Southern suburbs - a traditional 19th century block town with amazing architecture and atmosphere, but scarred by the railway and the sharp impact on old industrial sites.
6. Old industrial zone - originally the industrial outskirts of the city, today its wider center, from where traditional industry is gradually leaving and perhaps the germ of the city's technological progress is entering here.
7.  Between Bory residential district and Bory industrial zone - an unused and urbanistically chaotic strip of land between the residential part of the city (Bory) and one of the largest industrial zones in Central Europe (Borská pole).

KOLÍN: THE OUTSKIRTS OF PRAGUE?

SS 2025

VISION AND COCNCEPT OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY OF KOLIN

Kolín is a historic industrial city located on the Elbe River and also on the main transit railway corridor from Prague to Pardubice and on to Moravia. Kolín has always been an important center of the central Polabí region. Due to the growth of the Prague metropolitan region and the speeding up and improvement of the railway connection with Prague, Kolín is also becoming highly attractive for daily commuting to work and services in Prague.

The importance of Kolín is growing exponentially and the city needs its new vision and concept of future urban development. This will be processed in the summer semester of 2024/2025 by the students of Ateliér Šindlerová / Urban Planning Studio. All student proposals, initiatives and ideas will be a fundamental basis for the city of Kolín for the elaboration of the new spatial plan of the city, which is being prepared in the coming years.

------------------------------------------------

The studio assignment will be processed in close cooperation with architect of the city of Kolín David Mateásko and with representatives of the city management.

Kolín is a model area for students of the Spatial Planning Module. >> Regular students will work together with Spatial Planning Module students who specialize in urban planning and spatial development planning to process assignments.

------------------------------------------------

Based on a visit to the city, a discussion with the city architect and representatives of the city hall, and after carrying out a comprehensive mapping and analysis of the current state of the city area, students (in a group) will be able to focus on processing one of the following profile topics of the future urban development of Kolín:

THE CITY AND THE RIVER: The Phenomenon of the City-River Relationship. A proposal for the inclusion of the Elbe River in the structure and life of the city, making the river more accessible to residents and visitors, including a solution for accessibility along the river.

SYSTEM OF PUBLIC SPACES: A network of public spaces as a management system for the entire city. Design manual of public spaces in Kolín.

THE CITY AND THE CAR FACTORY: The TPCA car factory in Ovčáry as the industrial heart of the city, but at the same time lying outside the city. Finding ways to optimally integrate the car factory into the city.

BROWNFIELDS AROUND THE RAILWAY: The railway from Kolín to Prague as the main artery of the city. Urban design for the transformation of extensive neglected and only extensively used industrial and commercial areas around the railway into full-fledged urban districts, served by trains from Kolín to Prague.

INTERFACE OF CITY AND LAND: Urban ecotone at the transition of built-up city to open landscape. Searching for the best structure, filling and form of the outer perimeter of the city's development.
