PLZEŇ/PILSEN / THE HISTORICAL WORKERS´SUBURBS OF THE FUTURE
ZS 2024
Assignment
Adaptation of former workers´suburbs into modern residential districts meeting all contemporary and future housing demands of all generations.
------------------------------------------------
The studio assignment will be processed in collaboration with the Urban Planning and Development Institute Pilsen.
------------------------------------------------
The greatest challenge of contemporary urbanism and urban planning is the adaptation of already existing historical urban structures to new conditions, such as climate change, population aging, the constant growth of automobiles, or the depopulation and peripheralization of city centers and traditional residential districts, and, conversely, the development of satellite suburbs of family houses in landscape. The economy of large cities and metropolises is also undergoing radical changes, traditional industry is disappearing or leaving the city, and new economic sectors are coming to cities, with new demands on urban planning and the relationship to residential areas.
The task for students of Ateliér Šindlerová / Urban Planning Studio in the winter semester 2024/2025 will be a proposal to adapt the traditional historical working-class suburbs of the city of Pilsen to completely new conditions for quality and sustainable living and living in an industrial metropolis.
Three historical block suburbs of Pilsen - VNITŘNÍ MĚSTO (INNER CITY) / BORY / SLOVANY were selected as model areas in cooperation with the Department of Conception and Development of the City of Pilsen. All three districts are adjacent to the uniquely preserved medieval core of the city of Pilsen, yet they are separated from it, either by the physical barriers of railways and road overpasses, or mentally. They are "cities within a city", unique worlds full of contrasts, diverse urban structures and environmental qualities, lined by deep green valleys of the Radbuza, Úhlava and Úslava rivers.
------------------------------------------------
Inhospitable streets, without trees, shade or cooling, full of passing or parked cars.
The ubiquitous impenetrable barriers of road overpasses, railway lines and sidings, industrial areas. The former working-class suburbs adjoin the core of the city, yet are separated from it and are difficult to access from it.
Eroded urban structure, gaps, missing corners, unused potential of inner blocks.
Inside the city, yet the environment is more like a freeway.
The ubiquitous relics of a rich history...
... and the famous industrial past of the neighborhoods and the entire city of Pilsen.
Beautiful but neglected nature within reach.
------------------------------------------------
Based on the joint mapping and analysis of the current state of the area of the former working-class suburbs VNÍTŘNÍ MĚSTO (INER CITY) / BORY / SLOVANY and the formulation of a common vision and the basic concept of the structuring and organization of the entire territory, each student (or pair of students) will choose a part of the area that appeals and interests him the most, for which he will develop a detailed urban plan. At the end, the individual partial proposals will be combined into a single whole and the result will be a catalog of model urban interventions and impacts on the structure of traditional Pilsen working-class suburbs.
